ABOUT US

Jon Green, Director
As a young child, Jonathan played the drums and choreographed dance routines with his sister and neighborhood friends in Chicago. In high school he was accepted into Marian Catholic High School's nationally ranked marching band and performed in other school dance groups and bands at the same time. At St. Joseph's College he accepted a music scholarship where he exemplified leadership as a captain of most bands and produced as well as performed in winning collegiate talent contest shows. Since graduation Jonathan has diligently studied, in various parts of the country, all types of dance including waltz, tango, foxtrot, salsa, merengue, cha-cha, swing, hip hop, rumba, Chicago style steppin', and more. Teaching the art of dance in both group and private settings, he currently works in the Tidewater area six days a week. Jon still loves to perform and recently has done so everywhere from the Oceanfront in Virginia Beach to MTV's My Super Sweet Sixteen television show; in addition, he has entertained in ballroom showcases, weddings and other events.

When I was first exposed to Chicago Style Steppin it seemed like something only for professional dancers. Women in stylish shoes & dresses floating to the lead of a man who enjoys dancing to an infectious rhythm...it seemed like a scene out of a movie. Now, almost a year later it is so flattering to dance and be complimented on something I was not even sure I would be able to do. Steppin is addicting!
Linwood Ward
Linwood was born and raised in Portsmouth, Virginia. He settled in Hampton after his retirement from the Air Force. He has always loved being on the dance floor. He took his first Steppin class a little less than 1 ½ years at the invitation of his friend and co-worker Alexis. He quickly caught the Steppin bug and the rest is history.

It was love at first sight! I saw them Steppin' and I knew right away, I wanted and needed to become one of them… The energy and appreciation for the dance that is apparent in the Stepper’s community is uplifting. Two elements of Steppin' are most appealing to me. First, this dance form has great potential to bring the young and the old together and I will never get to old to Step. As a beginning Stepper I have set a goal for myself. I want to find the smooth in me. Knowing that I am destined by the abiding truth “ashes to ashes and dust to dust”; between these two inevitable events I want to get my Step on.

Kimberly White
As one of the  “core” Virginia Beach Steppers, this North Carolina native has been steppin' for a little less than 1 ½ years. “I love how Chicago Steppin' can go from being very chill and sexy to having more of a funky edge. It’s very versatile which was the biggest draw for me, having never taken any formal dance lessons before.  No matter what I’m in the mood for, it’s the perfect vehicle for transporting me to where I want to go.”

Jock Hughes
Born and raised in Va. Beach, Virginia Jock has been dancing since the middle of 2005. With his over all positive attitude and little bit of west side flare Jock tends to lean towards the Hip Hop side of stepping. Having background in both Latin and Ballroom dance don’t be surprised to see a little extra spinning or a smooth pause when it come to Jocks style. Following in Jonathan Greens footsteps Jock loves to perform and can be seen dancing throughout the Tidewater area. Born and raised around the beach his unique character and unusual style is a sight to be seen in this ever growing stepping community.

Debra Hunt
She was born in North Carolina and lived in New York City and Richmond, VA before moving to Virginia Beach. She holds a B.F.A. and M.ED. From VCU and belongs to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Sister Network, and the Urban League Guild. She own’s Hunt Homes of VA Realty and as a result of working long hours and the general intensity of the job, began to dance ballroom as a form of exercise and stress relief. In time she found and favored salsa(mambo), and cha cha. Then she met jonathan green! As one who learned to hand dance with the bedroom door, moving toward stepping was natural. She loves the fact that this dance looks and feels good regardless of the tempo. She is most remembered for planning her dance schedule around chemo therapy. Yes, she is still dancing!

Natasha Kind
My name is Natasha King and I am 21 yrs old. I am a full-time Nursing Student and I really love to dance. I have been dancing for 3 months. Starting out, I only came to the chicago steppin class because my aunt wanted me to and I had nothing else to do. But once I came, I loved it immediately because its a different style of dance than I was used to. It was new and a challenge and I wanted to master it. Chicago steppin is a part of me now. Everywhere I go, I am either doing the dance or trying to teach someone how to do it. Its one of those things that once you do, you never want to stop.
David
When I met Jonathan I told him I had two left feet & bet him I he could not teach me to dance. I have been dancing for less than a year but I am definitely beginning to feel at home on the dance floor. I have been trying to tackle the dance floor from both the Latin & Ballroom angles but have developed a strong passion for Chicago Style Steppin. My name is David and I will see you on the dance floor.
Zack
I've been Steppin for about a year now & I absolutely LOVE this dance. I wanted to get out of the club and into a more formal style of dancing with structure to have more fun. That is exactly what I have been doing! I have an instructor that keeps it interesting and always shows me something new. I rec commend Chicago Style Steppin to anyone who wants to have fund dancing.
Bijard Jones
Growing up, I listened to music more than watching television which definitely has an effect on my desire to dance. The two naturally go together, whether snapping your fingers or bouncing your head you don’t realize it the beat just takes over. While at family functions I would see people couple up and move in sync to the rhythm and would just watch almost in a trance. I knew then I had to learn how to dance. Jon’s class has helped me feed the desire, relieve a stressful week and meet some great people all in the span of 1 hr.
