Jon Green, Director
As a young child, Jonathan played the drums and choreographed dance
routines with his sister and neighborhood friends in Chicago.
In high school he was accepted into Marian Catholic High School's
nationally ranked marching band and performed in other school
dance groups and bands at the same time. At St. Joseph's College
he accepted a music scholarship where he exemplified leadership
as a captain of most bands and produced as well as performed
in winning collegiate talent contest shows. Since graduation
Jonathan has diligently studied, in various parts of the country,
all types of dance including waltz, tango, foxtrot, salsa, merengue,
cha-cha, swing, hip hop, rumba, Chicago style steppin', and
more. Teaching the art of dance in both group and private settings,
he currently works in the Tidewater area six days a week. Jon
still loves to perform and recently has done so everywhere from
the Oceanfront in Virginia Beach to MTV's My Super Sweet Sixteen
television show; in addition, he has entertained in ballroom
showcases, weddings and other events.

When I was first exposed to Chicago Style Steppin it seemed like something only for professional dancers. Women in stylish shoes & dresses floating to the lead of a man who enjoys dancing to an infectious rhythm...it seemed like a scene out of a movie. Now, almost a year later it is so flattering to dance and be complimented on something I was not even sure I would be able to do. Steppin is addicting! |

Linwood Ward
Linwood was born and raised in Portsmouth, Virginia. He settled in
Hampton after his retirement from the Air Force. He has always loved
being
on the dance floor. He took his first Steppin class a little less
than
1 ½ years at the invitation of his friend and co-worker Alexis. He
quickly caught the Steppin bug and the rest is history. |

Jock Hughes
Born and raised in Va. Beach, Virginia Jock has been dancing since the
middle of 2005. With his over all positive attitude and little bit
of west side flare Jock tends to lean towards the Hip Hop side of
stepping. Having background in both Latin and Ballroom dance don’t
be surprised to see a little extra spinning or a smooth pause when
it come to Jocks style. Following in Jonathan Greens footsteps Jock
loves to perform and can be seen dancing throughout the Tidewater
area. Born and raised around the beach his unique character and unusual
style is a sight to be seen in this ever growing stepping community. |

When I met Jonathan I told him I had two left feet & bet him I he could not teach me to dance. I have been dancing for less than a year but I am definitely beginning to feel at home on the dance floor. I have been trying to tackle the dance floor from both the Latin & Ballroom angles but have developed a strong passion for Chicago Style Steppin. My name is David and I will see you on the dance floor. |

I've been Steppin for about a year now & I absolutely LOVE this dance. I wanted to get out of the club and into a more formal style of dancing with structure to have more fun. That is exactly what I have been doing! I have an instructor that keeps it interesting and always shows me something new. I rec commend Chicago Style Steppin to anyone who wants to have fund dancing. |

Growing up, I listened to music more than watching television which definitely has an effect on my desire to dance. The two naturally go together, whether snapping your fingers or bouncing your head you don’t realize it the beat just takes over. While at family functions I would see people couple up and move in sync to the rhythm and would just watch almost in a trance. I knew then I had to learn how to dance. Jon’s class has helped me feed the desire, relieve a stressful week and meet some great people all in the span of 1 hr. |

I was first introduced to Chicago Steppin this year when I started dancing at Mambo Room. Dancing is definitely a HUGE passion of mine and one of the reasons I selected Mambo Room was because of the diversity of dance styles. Chicago Steppin with Jon Green was one of the first classes that I took and I've been steppin ever since! I love the music and the smooth and sexy rhythmn of the dance. When life gets crazy I always know that I can just leave it all behind, get in my dance zone, and just be ME! It's very calming and soothing to my soul. I feel very blessed and very thankful to be here doing what I LOVE! |

“Sometime we’re thrown into unfamiliar circumstances, it’s up to you to capitalize and excel”…As a retired Army combat veteran; I made Hampton Roads my surrogate abode. Originally from Brooklyn NYC Bedford-Stuyvesant, I attended Morgan State University (MSU) majoring in Tele-Communication. Because of my love for music and dancing I joined MSU marching band. MSU’s band wasn’t your run of the mill marching band; anyone who attended an HBCU will know what I’m talking about. The uniqueness of our dance routine while simultaneously playing a musical instrument separated us from your more conventional marching bands. My excitement for this assortment of performing and it not being available; I wanted something that would fill that void. A co-worker invited me to attend a Sunday Steppin’ social, at the Mambo room on Sunday and the rest is history. This is how my Steppin journey began. The first night wasn’t too pleasant, however, after that night I knew this was something I really enjoyed and wanted to continue. |

I have been dancing (some type of) since age 4; started with ballet, tap, then jazz, then pointe ballet all through my school years; then I tried out modern ballet and african dancing while a part of my college's dance company. There was a period thereafter where I did no dancing, except occasional club/freestyle and realized how much I really missed it! I saw a sign for ballroom lessons (with Jon, who knew?), signed up, learned some waltz, salsa, cha cha and after a practice one night saw LaKeitha and Jon doing some "steppin". I didn't know what they were doing at the time but only knew I wanted to learn THAT! The rest is history! I love the smooth flow of this dance! I had also never partner-danced before (and still have some trouble being "led") but I am learning :) Of all the dance-styles I have tried, I still favor this one; I guess dancing's just "in my bones!" |

I have been steppin for months now with VBS and I love this dance!!! I have been wanting to learn how to step for over 5 years now, not only is it fun, but its a great way to get some exercise in as well. Being somewhat new to the area, I never expected to meet so many people who are passionate about steppin too!
